When the letter -e comes to the end of a word it is not pronounced, but it affects the pronunciation of the preceding vowel. It is silent but effective!
Kelime sonlarına gelir ama okunmaz, okunmaz ama kendinden önceki sesleri değiştirir. İşte ingilizcede sessiz E
Hello, and welcome to today’s video where we’ll be talking about the silent ‘e’ in English. The silent ‘e’ is a sneaky little letter that can make a big difference in the way we pronounce words. You may have noticed that sometimes when we add an -e to the end of the word it doesn’t seem to make a sound. That’s because this is what we call a silent -e, also known as magic e or final e, so what does the silent -e actually do? Well, it actually changes the way we pronounce the vowel in the syllable that comes before it. For example, ‘hat’ becomes ‘hate’, but notice that we don’t actually say ‘hate’ with two syllables like ‘hey’ ‘T’. Instead, the -e at the end of the word changes the pronunciation of the ‘a’ in ‘hat’ and makes ‘hate’ with a long a sound. Now, let’s look at the examples: ‘tap’, ‘tape’; ‘fat’, ‘fate’; ‘hat’, ‘hate’; ‘hop’, ‘hope’; ‘rid’, ‘ride’; ‘cut’, ‘cute’; ‘hum’, ‘Hume’; ‘Rob, ‘robe’.
Let’s have a look at more examples. In each of these examples, adding the letter ‘e’ to the end of the word changes the pronunciation of the vowel in the syllable. This is known as a silent E because it is not pronounced as a separate sound but changes the pronunciation.
That’s it for today’s video on the silent e in English. I hope you found it helpful and interesting. If you have any questions or comments, please, feel free to leave them below and as always don’t forget to ‘like’ and ‘subscribe’ for more videos like this one. Thanks for watching, goodbye.
