Speaking task: Only children are bossy and selfish

In this speaking task sample, I have tried to show you how you can argue against or for (agree or disagree with) the statement that ‘only children are bossy, lazy and selfish’. There are more sample agree/disagree tasks at the end of the video. You can try it yourself and share the result as a comment.

I agree. Only children are selfish and bossy. First, they are selfish. They get all the love and time from their parents. They don’t have to share the love or time with anybody else. Also, there are no limits in their house. They have everything for themselves. Second, they are bossy, too. They are like adults. They are not good friends. Yes, they can be mature, because they behave like their parents, but I think they can be selfish or bossy. They should behave like a child.

I agree with this statement. Only children can be selfish and bossy. First, they are selfish because they get all the love and time they need from their parents. They do not like sharing love or time with others because they don’t have to. Moreover, they have no limits at home. They may desire to keep everything for themselves. Second, they are bossy. They act like adults so they cannot be good friends. I know that only children can be more mature. This is because their role models are their parents. Maybe, this is true but a child should behave like a child. I think, only children will probably be selfish or bossy with no brothers or sisters.

I partially agree with this statement. I feel that only children might be more selfish and bossy. First of all, they can be selfish as their parents give all their love, time and money. Only children are not always ready to share these with others. Moreover, they don’t learn their limits as they get everything they want in their house. They may have an unlimited wish to keep things for themselves. Second, they can be bossy towards their peers. This is because they get perspectives from elder people. This means they are bossier with their friends. I’m aware that being an only child doesn’t always have negative effects. For instance, if they take their parents as their role models, they may behave more maturely for their age. Although this may be true, I still believe that all children should enjoy being a child. Only children may grow up selfish or bossy without a sibling.

I agree with this statement to some extent. I feel that only children might be more selfish and bossy. First of all, they can be selfish as their parents dedicate all their love, time and money to them. Without a brother or sister, they are mostly unaware of their limits as everything naturally belongs to them in their house. This may result in an unlimited/unrestrained desire to spare/set aside things for themselves. Only children, therefore, are not always ready to share all these with someone else such as a sibling. Second, they can be bossy towards their peers as they grow up with adults’ perspectives which means they adopt a more authoritative approach in their friendship. I’m aware that not all only children have to bear negative traits solely. For instance, by taking their parents as their role models, they may behave more maturely for their age. Although this may be true, I still believe that all children should have the opportunity to live/experience their childhood. Therefore, I think only children may grow up selfish or bossy.
